Grilling Safety

Grills and smokers run hot for hours. Always cook outdoors, at least ten feet from the house, siding, deck railings and anything that can catch, and never under a low overhang or inside a garage, tent or enclosed porch. Charcoal, pellets and propane all produce carbon monoxide, which you cannot see or smell.

Keep children and pets well back from a lit grill and from a cooling one, since lids, griddle tops and fireboxes stay hot long after the food is off. Use long-handled tools and heat-resistant gloves. Never add lighter fluid to lit coals, and let ashes cool fully in a metal can before you throw them out.

Follow each manufacturer's instructions for pellet grill startup and shutdown, propane connections and leak checks, and grease management. A full grease tray or cup is the most common cause of a backyard grill fire. Cook meat to safe internal temperatures and check them with a thermometer: 165°F for poultry, 160°F for ground meats, and 145°F with a rest for whole cuts of beef, pork and lamb. Inspect any grill brush before each use and replace it when it wears.
